Local AARP Chapter Votes
To Dissolve After 40 Years

President, Pat Mallory called the local AARP meeting to order.  Betty Holden led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance and America the Beautiful.  Virginia Tanton gave the invocation.    

Nan Bell introduced Mary Ferguson from SAFE-T (Shelter Agency for Families in East Texas).  Mary Ferguson presented a program about SAFE-T and how people could become volunteers in the program.  SAFE-T Agency provides services for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault.  SAFE-T serves Hopkins, Titus, Camp, Delta, Franklin, Lamar, Morris and Red River Counties.  SAFE-T has many outreach services that they offer.  Mary spoke about Elder Abuse.  Elder Abuse isn't just about physical abuse.  It comes in many different forms. (i.e. mental abuse, emotional abuse and financial abuse).  SAFE-T is located at 611 Gilmer St. (Inside the CANHelp building). The Treasurers report was read and accepted.  

The Local AARP Chapter 1068 was awarded a Letter of Recognition for Celebrating its 40 Year Anniversay of service to Hopkins County.   Pat Mallory was presented the Andrus Award Pin by Karon Weatherman. The Andrus Award is AARP's most prestigious volunteer award for community service.  The award is given annually to one AARP volunteer or AARP member in the state.  Pat Mallory was nominated for this award for her appreciation and contributions to Hopkins County and the State of Texas.   

Linda Mobley presented Pat Mallory with a "Community Service Award" for her outstanding Service to AARP and to the citizens of Hopkins County.

After 40 Years of Service in Hopkins County the local AARP Chapter 1068 has decided that times have changed and the needs of the people have changed.   Much discussion was made about dissolving the local chapter.   A motion was made by Nan Bell to dissolve the chapter.  The motion was seconded by Betty Holden. A vote was taken.   There were 39 Votes cast.. 37 voted Yes to dissolve and 2 voted no.   The motion to dissolve was passed.   The Group didn't want to stop volunteering in the Community so a new Volunteer Group is being formed.  It is called "A.C.T.S. of Love".  Adults Coming Together Serving.    The group will keep the same meeting time on the First Monday of every month.  Lunch will be at 11:00 and a Program will be at 11:30.   Dues will still be $ 5.00 for the year.    The group will be all about Volunteering in the Community.

If anyone is interested in Volunteering in Hopkins County they will be encouraged to join the A.C.T.S. of Love group.   Attached is the NEW Logo for the group.    At the January 7, 2012 there will be a drawing for everyone who has paid their membership dues for the 2013 year.  The drawing will be for a $ 25.00 Gift Card.
