Oscar Aguilar Named New
Mayor of Sulphur Springs, Tuesday Night

In action of the annual reorganization meeting of the Sulphur Springs City Council, Oscar Aguilar was voted by his peers for the position as new Mayor of Sulphur Springs. Aguilar replaces Yolanda Williams, who did not win re-election in the May City Council race.

City Councilman, Gary Spraggins was selected for the Mayor Pro Tem position.

City Secretary Gale Roberts issued the Oath of Office to newly elected Councilmen Chris Brown and Charles Oxford, at Tuesday night's meeting.

 

 

City Manager Marc Maxwell gave the Manager's Report and reported on the status of the capital improvements.

In other action, the Council discussed the second and final reading on Ordinance No. 2542, establishing a reinvestment zone for Ocean Spray Cranberries Inc. and discussed action on Resolution No. 959, authorizing the City Manager to enter into a contract with Ocean Spray for a tax abatement.

A beautiful model of the Vetran's Memorial and Hopkins County Courthouse were brought to the council meeting. The model for the proposed memorial had been constructed by local artist, Jerry Lee, and offered a conceptual rendering of the way the downtown area of Sulphur Springs will look after funds are raised for the Veteran's Memorial and construciton is completed.

Other action included a contractural agreement with Atomos Energy; a discussion of facade grand summaries for the downtown area, on Main Street;  and action on a Final Replat of the Shannon Oaks Addition and a change request by Wayne Caldwell and Shannon Oaks Church, dealing with property lines. Other items included a Final Plat of the Alpha Omega Energy Addition, owned by Jeffery Chester; a discussion of the Final Plat of the Travis School Additon and a request by SSISD to replat property located on the North side of Main Street and the East side of Garrison Street; and the appointment of board members to a number of city advisory boards.
