New Book About Neighboring
Delta County, Recounts 1920's Small Town Living
by: Bobby McDonald
Join former English teacher, Susan A. Hyde, with "deep roots" in Delta County, on a journey back in time, to the 1920's and 30's in Delta County. The story could have just as easily unfolded on the streets of Sulphur Springs, as Cooper. It was a period in our history when neighbors knew exactly what was happening next door, and everyone shared the news of the community by word of mouth, instead of a cell phone and facebook. It was a period when small town life consisted of evenings on the porch, letters from relatives, and the weekly Lion's Club luncheon, when the businessmen in town planned the things that would happen in the town. Life was serene and depended on the growth of the cotton crop in the nearby fields, the weather, and everyone "knowing their place" in society.
Hyde examines the story of a young Mississippi medical school graduate, who comes to open a practice in Cooper, Texas. However, Dr. Clayton Dade "has connections," two of his uncles are residents of Cooper, so the introduction into the rather "closed" society isn't quite as hard as it would have been for an "outsider!"
Add to the equation, a small town murder, jealous, and yes, a little bit of love and affection, and you've got the perfect plot for an intriguing novel, about an event that actually happened!

In Hyde's A Listing Wind, you'll meet a familiar cast of characters, very similar to those you've remembered here in Hopkins County, and you'll keep turning the pages as the plot unfolds with mystery and the way life was in Depression Era of Northeast Texas.
Susan A. Hyde holds a B.S. degree in history from Texas A&M University-Commerce, and received dual masters degrees from the University of Texas at Arlington in Urban Affairs and the University of Dallas in Civic Affairs. She returned to her native Cooper to manage the affairs of an elderly relative and re-discovered the stories and joys of small town living, in a rural Texas town. Her discoveries are the basis for this her first novel, published by Two Harbors Press.
