At Austin Elementary School"

Martha Grubbs Oppenheim, Billie Jean Bagby Hooten, Linda Young Potts, Morna Harry Moss, Pam Hall
White, and Sheila Jacobs Moore stand beside the demolition of their Austin Elementary School, as they
share memories of attending the school for six years.

"That was Mr. Harvey Harrington's room!" exclaimed one of the ladies.

"And, over there was Mrs. Dildy's and Mrs. Beckham's rooms!" shouted another.

"This is where I won a bubble blowing contest, the school library!" remembered another.

Six members of the SSHS Class of 1969, that all started school at Austin Elementary School, in first grade, and attended together through the sixth grade, gathered on Friday morning to share memories and shed a few tears, as they watched the school building being demolished. "This was our life, for six years!" expressed the friends, as they shared memories of special teachers, humorous events, and just having a great time on the playground. "This school definitely shaped our lives and it is here that we 'bonded' together in a friendship that continues to this day!"

"It's so, so sad to see the building being torn down," expressed another of the ladies. "We've come to say good-bye and to share our memories, with each other, and to take some pictures to share with classmates all over the world!"

Much of the building has already been "gutted" but complete demolition will take place next week.

"Remember, that's where our lockers were located, and we all wanted to stand just a certain way and be seen by the boys!" expressed another lady. "That was when we were in the fifth and sixth grades, and when we had Mr. Downs for a teacher!"

"Don't tell who said it, we all know who it was, that had to stand in the hall, right there in that corner!" exclaimed another one!

"Special memories will outlast the brick and mortar that this school was built with," added another. "We're thankful to have had the opportunity to share good times, a few tears, and loads of fun, within these walls!"
