Blue Blazes Celebrate 50 Years of
History
by: Bobby McDonald

Former members and directors of the Sulphur Springs High School Blue Blazes
gathered for a reception prior to Saturday night's performance.
It was a large crowd of former members of the Blue Blazes Drill Team that "came back" on Friday and Saturday nights, to join current members of the troupe, in their spring show, as everyone celebrated 50 years of the organization's history. Former members and directors were introduced at a reception, hosted in the high school cafeteria prior to Saturday night's performance, and on stage.
"I have very fond memories of my time as a member and captain of the Blue Blazes in 1976," expressed Julie Hager Ashmore, now a teacher in the SSISD. "And, then I was director of the organization and really enjoyed seeing many of the young ladies who were in my troupe."
"I was one of the original charter members and it was one of my pictures that inspired the Blazes charm," allowed Sue Ann Green Johnson, as she got ready to perform in the anniversary show. "I remember the humble beginnings of the Blue Blazes and Bill Tuck used a picture of me to make the charm that continues to be a symbol of the Blazes, to add to the trivia of the history of the Blazes."
