"Once in a Blue Moon"
Friday Night Offers Rare Moon
by: Bobby McDonald
Although Friday night's "Blue Moon" could have a blue tint to it, the phenomenon of a "blue" moon is not referring to its color or hue, but to its rarity. A blue moon occurs when two full moons are in one month and the last one was on New Year's Eve, December 31, 2009. And, the next one is not expected until 2015. The rotation of full moons is 29.5 days apart and they seldom "line up" to occur in the same calendar month.
Friday night's full moon, unless obscured by remnant clouds from Hurricane Isaac, should be very visible during tonight's football games, so look into the sky to get a spectacular view, and who knows, it could actually be tinted blue......last night's "almost full moon" was certainly tinted that way!
