DEAR SENATOR
by
Essie Mae Washington Williams

Feel the power behind the politics and come join the double world of being born
bi-racial, with Essie Mae, the daughter of Senator Strom Thurmond of South
Carolina, one of the most powerful political figures in America. Essie Mae, the
daughter of a young black woman reared in the Old South Thurmond home, is a
teenager before she learns that the politician is her father. And, she enters
into a world of southern prejudice that was the norm during her formative years.

From the fringes of "the other side of the tracks," she watches as Thurmond rises
in political ranks, first as Governor of South Carolina, and then escalates to U.S.
Senator, all the while, being forced to only meet him behind the scenes, where
reporters and "prying" eyes will not recognize them for their father/daughter
status.

Along with the many trials that she must endure, Essie Mae is well educated at her
father's expense and he is generous with his material wealth, but never openly
recognizes her existence because of his political aspirations. Learn what it is
like to be a young black woman separated on the "fringes" of the Civil Rights
Movement, and knowing that her white father seeks to thwart its progress by
imposing legislation that is contrary to equality.

A heartwarming true account of the struggles of the 1950's, 1960's, and 70's in
Black America, and a "front row" seat before the stage of the private life of one
of America's most powerful political figures. It's sure to make you ponder what
other secrets exist behind the seats of power!
