Basketball Is in the Genes.....
by: Bobby McDonald
History is in the making, this week, for one Hopkins County family, as the Saltillo Lady Lions make their trip to Austin and State Basketball Tournament. For Lady Lion Senior, Karli Brewer, it is truly a dream come true!
You see, Karli is the third daughter of Barry and Debbie Russell Brewer to compete in the State Tournament. It was when Karli was only six years old, back in 2001, that she began hoping for the chance to go to the State Basketball Tournament. That was the year that her older sisters, Kayla a senior and Kelli, a junior, were members of the 2001 Lady Lions Team, that went to State.
And, that isn't all of the Hopkins County Basketball trivia that culminates in this family. Karli's mom, Debbie, is the daughter of Coach Jim Russell, that created his own Basketball Dynasty at Sulphur Springs High School, back in the 1980's, establishing the winningest record at SSHS, in history.

"I guess the love of the game and winning at basketball is somewhere in our genes!" proclaimed a proud Jim Russell, on Saturday night, following the Lady Lion Regional win in Tyler. "The boys and girls in our family have all played and done well, but it seems that the girls are the ones that make it to Austin!"
And, you can bet that Jim Russell will be in the stands at Austin, as he joins his family in cheering Karli to victory!
Congratulations, Karli and the entire Russell family!!!!
