Sulphur Springs and Hopkins
County Respond
"League Street Church of Christ
Clothes Closet Processing Clothes
For Storm Victims"
by: Bobby McDonald

They've come in bags, boxes, sacks, and by the rack........Sulphur Springs and Hopkins County
residents have responded to the call for refugee clothing and all of them are being processed at
the League Street Church of Christ Clothes Closet.
While many of us were spending our Labor Day holiday at the lake, with family, or just "kicked back" enjoying a day of rest, members of the League Street Church of Christ were busy sorting, sizing, and packing clothing for victims of Hurricane Katrina. We caught up with twenty-plus members of the church as they dealt with the "mountain" of donated items from across town. "Many people brought clothes to their respective churches on Sunday and they must be grouped in sizes and made available to the refugees in Sulphur Springs, first, and then packed for distribution to other areas needing clothing," advised Gayla Strait, as she sorted and separated clothes into groups. "We're happy with the great response and it is a great feeling to be doing something to aid those in need!"
League Street volunteers indicated that a steady supply of clothing is coming into the church from all across town with critical items of need being packaged underwear and socks, to include in the offering for victims."We urged our members yesterday to bring these packaged items and are asking that anyone wanting to contribute something to consider going to a store and purchasing packaged undergarments and socks," stated Debra Isham. "This is something that doesn't take a large cash outlay and is critically needed to accompany the clothes that so many have so generously donated!"
Clothing not needed by the evacuees in the Salvation Army Shelter in Sulphur Springs, were being packed
for a final destination to Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
"We've been in contact with centers in other portions of Texas and in South Louisiana and the items that have been donated here that are not needed are being packed according to size and sent to the needed areas," advised Linda Ross. "With the astounding number of individuals displaced, the need is great!"
Just a portion of the many volunteers that spent their Labor Day preparing clothes for distribution
to those displaced by Hurricane Katrina.
Organizing caos......These League Street Church of Christ members attempt to sort through clothing items
donated by the many generous people in Hopkins County, and prepare them for distribution.
"We've known all along what a generous community we lived in, but the response by Hopkins County has been great," confirmed Keith Kilmer, minister at League Street Church of Christ. "Everyone has been so, so generous and I'm certainly proud to say I live in Sulphur Springs and Hopkins County!"
"Where's the box for boy's size 13? " asks this volunteer from League Street Church of Christ,
as all of the clothes had to be sorted and grouped.
Workers at League Street Clothes Closet spent their Labor Day sizing and grouping an enormous
amount of clothes, to ready them for distribution to storm victims.
"I can't think of a better way to spend my Labor Day than helping the many victims of Hurricane Katrina," stated an exuberant Kari Smith, who was accompanied to the League Street Clothes Closet with her husband, Butch. "Gasoline is high and there was a need here, so we decided to do something to make us feel good and that was sorely needed, this Labor Day!"
