THE SQUARE – The Oak Street reconstruction project began today. It will include Oak/College intersection and the segment adjacent to the courthouse, but not the intersection with Jefferson.  After this project is complete we will reconstruct the Oak/Jefferson intersection and the segment of Jefferson from Oak to Church.  Then we will reconstruct the Church/Jefferson intersection.

 

EAST SHANNON WATERLINE PROJECT – This project is progressing slowly.  The contractor had difficulties, but it should be completed soon.

 

SUMMER PAVING PROGRAM – The summer paving program is progressing well.  So far the following streets have been finished:  Thomas, Majors, Vicki, Betty, Buford, Connally, Georgia, Lakeview, Holiday, Bell, Hines, Century Lake, and Irwin.  This leaves Highland, S. Davis, Lee and League.

 

NEW CITY HALL – The newly erected scaffolding is a sign that the lead-based paint abatement contractor is preparing to begin his work.  The project is beginning in earnest.

 

CLAIMS - We had one minor workers’ compensation claim in August for a laceration.

 

We had two liability claims in July.  One was for a minor collision between a patrol car and a Hopkins County Sherriff patrol truck.  The other was for damage to a car, apparently caused by a city mowing crew.

 

REVENUES AND EXPENDITURES – Finance Director, Peter Karstens will present a year-to-date review of revenues and expenditures.

 

 

                                                                                                      

 

 

MISCELLANEOUS –   Elsewhere around the City, employees:

 

• Responded to 96 fire/rescue calls including 2 structure fires.
• Conducted 41 fire inspections.
• Performed preventative maintenance on 80 fire hydrants.
• Raised $7,000 with the Fill the Boot campaign for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
• Repaired 47 water breaks.
• Replaced 31 water meters and installed 1 water tap.
• Unstopped 22 sewer mains.
• Treated wastewater effluent to a total suspended solids reading of 3.23 mg/L.
• Hauled 705 cubic yards of sludge to the landfill.
• Repaired several pumps, valves and other apparatuses at the wastewater treatment plant.
• Replaced motor and variable frequency drive for Cooper Lake pump and performed preventative maintenance on both pumps.
• Flushed 37 dead-end water mains.
• Conducted 40 health inspections and 54 public nuisance inspections.
• Conducted 49 building inspections, 31 electrical inspections, 24 plumbing inspections, 15 mechanical inspections and issued 15 building permits.
• Awarded façade grants for 113 Gilmer, 217 Main and 224 Main.
• Patched 79 potholes.
• Made 16 street repairs following utility repairs.
• Swept 65 streets.
• Demolished buildings at 405 and 407 Connally.
• Processed 520 tickets through municipal court.
• Responded to 36 accidents, made 116 arrests, recorded 75 offenses and wrote 434 traffic tickets.
• Made 2 felony arrests in the Special Crimes Unit.
• Responded to 270 animal control calls and achieved an adoption rate of 60%.
