Cumby Trojans "Rally" In
4th Quarter, But Not Enough
to Defeat Maud
by: Bobby McDonald
It was a 20 point fourth-quarter for the Cumby Trojans, as they hosted the Maud Cardinals, on Friday night, but the late game rally wasn't enough to make-up for the scoreless previous three quarters for the Trojans. The Maud Cardinals beat Cumby 37-20.
It was a "slow" first half for the Cumby Trojans as they saw Maud outscore them 22-0, in the opening two periods. The Trojans managed a couple of great drives, only to have them called back for penalties or thwarted by a fumble or goal line defense. Players and coaches were frustrated, as they headed to the lockers for halftime.

The third quarter was again scoreless for the Trojans, as they saw the Cardinals add 12 points to their score. However, it was a fine fourth-quarter rally by the Trojans, that began with a 40 yard touchdown run by Rodney Hobbs with 8:33 left in the period. The two point conversion was not good, but the Trojans had their first six points on the scoreboard.

Then, quarterback Brixx Hawthorne connected with senior receiver, Kris Stanford, for a 13 yard touchdown run, with 5:17 left in the game. The Trojans were stopped on the attempted two-point conversion.

Then, again, with only seconds left in the game, Hawthorne found Stanford again, and connected for a 21 yard pass, that resulted in six more points. Nathan Dunnihoo ran for three yards on the two-point conversion, and boosted the score by two more points. The final curtain closed with Maud leading 37-20.
The Maud Cardinal Band added to the halftime entertainment, Friday night.
"I'm proud of the boys," expressed Coach Kent Hawthorne. "They played hard and never gave up, despite being behind almost from the very start of the game. We knew Maud would be a tough opponent and that we would have a tough ballgame!"

In the rushing game, Rodney Hobbs led the Trojans with four attempts for 57 yards. Nathan Dunnihoo added 16 yards and a two-point conversion and Brix Hawthorne contributed 23 yards to the effort. Jake Vann had 6 yards of rushing for the night.

Kris Stanford had six receptions in passing department for a total of 77 yards and the two touchdowns. Dunnihoo had 14 yards receiving and Michael Morris added 37 yards to the effort. Rodney Hobbs finished the game with three receptions for a total of 42 yards.
The Trojans contributed 272 offensive yards to the effort and Brixx Hawthorne had 170 yards of total passing yards for the night.
Cumby will have the October 5th date as an open night in their schedule, as they regroup and get ready for district play. On October 12th, they will travel to A+ Academy to open their district season.
