Hopkins County Couple Recognized
For Donation to TAMU-C
Press Release from TAMU-C
Who would have dreamed, back in the 1960's when a boy from Alba, Texas, and a girl from Gilmer, Texas, met at then East Texas State University, that some 40 years later, they would be recognized by that same institution? Well, Hopkins County residents, Wayne and Wanda Galyean, were honored with a reception on Tuesday, June 2, and recognized for their contribution to their alma mater, now named Texas A&M University-Commerce.
The monetary donation was made to the the new Science Building at Texas A&M University-Commerce and a conference room in the building will be named in their honor.
Wayne Galyean earned both his bachelors and masters degrees from the institution in education, as did his wife, Wanda. Wayne and Wanda moved to Sulphur Springs where Wayne taught and served as Vice-Principal and Principal of Sulphur Springs High School, until he entered private business as founder of Galyean Insurance in 1974. Wanda was homemaking teacher at Sulphur Springs High School, as well. Both Wayne and Wanda have chaired and served numerous civic organizations in Hopkins County, and continue to be a major influence in the community.
"We're excited to be able to return to the university that was so important in our education process," exclaimed Galyean, who serves on the University Foundation Board. "It was quite a step in life to go from Alba High School to East Texas State University, back in the 1960's. I'd never seen that many people in one school!"
