Gardening and Composting Seminars
Hosted on Thursday

It was a wonderful crowd that attended two Texas AgriLife Extension Service sponsored seminars, on Thursday, that highlighted composting and organic gardening. "We had approximately 40 people to come out for one or both of the semniars," indicated Dr. Mario Villarino, local Hopkins County Agent.

Ken Kunkle of Hooks, Texas, led the seminars and discussed various ways to compost your waste and to add organic matter back to the soil. Then, in the second seminar, he conducted discussions concerning fall gardening and organic ways to garden. In the second segment, he offered some varieties of vegetables that are suited for the Northeast Texas area.

Kunkle fielded questions from the audience, during both of his sessions on Thursday night.

"We learned a lot!" expressed Mary Gamblin, one of the attendees for both sessions. "I especially enjoyed the features of the fall gardening and Mr. Kunkle offered a number of tips to use in having a successful fall garden, once the temperatures cool some."

A number of door prizes were given by local businesses and participants were provided with "goody bags," and some composting material to start their own compost.

"We are always pleased when we have a program that is well received by the public," expressed Villarino. "And, this seems to be a topic that everyone was interested in and the attendance was great!"

Participants in Thursday night's programs received a portable compost bin and
a "goody bag" that held gardening supplies.
