One of Hopkins County's
Oldest Veterans Honored Sunday

One of Hopkins County's oldest veterans was honored in a ceremony, on Sunday afternoon, conducted by The Daughters of the Republic of Texas. Descendents of Green Weaver (1795-1863) gathered at the Greenview Cemetery in Southwestern Hopkins County to pay tribute to their ancestor and see a gold medallion placed on his tombstone, by The Daughters of the Republic of Texas, in tribute to his service, while fighting for the Texas Republic.
Green Weaver was born on November 17, 1795, in Chatham County, North Carolina, the son of Revolutionary War Patriot, Shadrach Weaver and Lucy Green.
He married Nellie Record of Chatham County, North Carolina, on January 11, 1821, in Maury County, Tennessee. To this union was born 6 children - Tinsley Wade Weaver, Sion Record Weaver, John Calvin Weaver, Shadrach Sion Weaver, William Thomas Green Weaver, and Dempsey James Weaver. While the family was enroute to Texas, Nellie was in poor health, after having lost two small children, and she died in Iowa Territory, on September 27, 1840.

After Nellie's burial, the family continued their journey to the Republic of Texas. In 1841, Green Weaver volunteered to defend The Republic of Texas as a Ranger in the Red River County Militia. He served in Capt. William Becknell's Company.
Weaver married Nancy McCrory, in Clarksville, Red River County, Texas, on April 29, 1841 and took her to his homestead in Hopkins County, where they lived and reared their children. To this union was born 9 children - Mary Jane Weaver Web Moseley, Samuel Houston Weaver, Martha A. Weaver, David Shephard Weaver, Jonathan Granville Weaver, Walter Scott Weaver, Susan E. Weaver, Joseph W. Weaver, and Margaret E. Weaver Gamblin.

Green Weaver was also a Christian Church minister in the Hopkins County area of Texas. He died at age 67, on his property in the Greenview Community, on October 2, 1863, and is buried in the Greenview Cemetery.
His daughter, Martha A. Weaver, is the oldest grave in the Greenview Cemetery.
