Kids' Safe Saturday and Other Events Coming Your Way Soon!

That's right - Kids' Safe Saturday will soon be here and the planning committee encourages families to join the fun! The event will be held on Saturday, April 21, 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Buford Park in Sulphur Springs. Come learn about home safety, auto safety, bicycle safety, water safety, say NO to drugs, sun safety, and much more!

The event is targeted toward families with children ages 12 and under, but all ages can benefit. Free hot dogs, drinks, and ice cream will be provided, along with games and prizes. Kids' Safe Saturday is made possible by numerous organizations, businesses, and agencies across Hopkins County.

Be sure to drop by the Texas AgriLife Extension exhibit! We will be providing UV beads and string for children to make their own sun bracelets. Watch as the beads turn from white to colors as they are exposed to the sun. I'll also have information about other upcoming events, so stop by and check it out!

Twogether in Texas Marriage Education Workshop

Last call for couples to sign up for the Spring 2012 marriage education workshop! The event will take place on Saturday, April 14, starting at 8:30 a.m. at the Hopkins County Extension Office, 1200 W. Houston Street. This free workshop includes the following topics: marriage expectations (what each individual expects his/her partner to bring into the marriage), communication (how well do you really communicate?), conflict resolution (we'll actually take the couples through the steps for resolving conflict), money management (this portion provides great information on keeping track of expenses), and goals & dreams (my personal favorite session!)

The workshop is fun, informative, entertaining, and to the point. No boredom here! An added benefit is that engaged couples will receive a certificate to save $60 upon applying for a marriage license. The certificate is good for an entire year, so even couples who aren't planning on getting married until later in the year or even early next year, can still take advantage of the savings! Although the workshop is free, couples DO need to call to reserve a seat 90-3885-3443. Please take advantage of this great opportunity!

Cooking Well with Diabetes

There is still time to sign up for the Cooking Well with Diabetes series, scheduled for April 16, 19, 23, and 26, 6:00 p.m. at the Extension Office. Topics include: Carbohydrate Foods, Making Recipes with Fat Better for You, Double-Pleasure Side Dishes (reducing sodium, increasing fiber), and Celebrating Sensibly with Diabetes.

Along with the lesson, two recipes will be demonstrated. At the end of each session, participants will sample the delectable dishes. Individuals who attend all four lessons will receive a cookbook titled, "Tastes of Texas". Cost for the series is $20, payable at the first session, to help cover expenses. There are still a few seats remaining, so call 903-885-3443 to sign up.

"Taking the Mystery Out of Diabetes"

This conference has been mentioned before, but I want to emphasize what a great opportunity this will be for those wanting to learn more about diabetes! The conference will be held Tuesday, May 1, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. First Baptist Church, Sulphur Springs, has once again opened their doors for us to hold the conference in their facility.

The conference will feature keynote speaker, Dr. Carol Rice, Professor and Health Specialist with Texas AgriLife Extension. Dr. Rice brings her expertise and knowledge of diabetes through her own experience of helping her son manage type 1 diabetes. Exhibits will highlight different services, products, and information. Lunch will catered by Cindy Welch, and while participants dine, cooking demonstrations and exercise demonstrations will take place. As an added bonus, cook books and stretch exercise bands will be provided for every participant.

Following lunch, participants will have the opportunity to attend two concurrent sessions. Selections include: "Got Questions? Get the Answers - Diabetes Basics"; "Insulin Use - Type 1 and Type 2"; "Wise Dining with Diabetes"; "Diabetes Medications"; "Wound Care/Foot Care"; "Signs & Symptoms - Other Diseases".

In addition to all of these, each participant will receive a goody bag loaded with information, samples, DVD's, and other goodies. Door prizes will be given throughout the day. Registration is $25, and must be postmarked on or before April 20. This conference is open to all individuals in the northeast Texas region. Registration brochures are available at the Hopkins County Extension Office - 1200 W. Houston, Southwest Dairy Museum, Wound Care Clinic, and surrounding county Extension Offices. Call 903-885-3443 for more information.
