More Opportunities Coming Your Way!

It has been said that Texas AgriLife Extension touches every aspect of life - and it's true!  Family relations, home, health, nutrition, youth, agriculture, livestock, forage, crops, community development - the list goes on and on.  With that said, below is a list of upcoming opportunities: 1)  Kids Cook at the Market: the next event is scheduled for Saturday, July 31, beginning at 9:00 a.m. at the Sulphur Springs Downtown Main Street Farmers' Market.  Kids ages 7 to 12 are invited to meet at the Extension exhibit for a brief introduction.  We will then tour the market to select fresh produce to be used in the day's recipe.  Back at the headquarters, we will wash hands and have a brief kitchen safety lesson before donning aprons and slicing fruit.  The recipe for the day is Fruit Smoothies.

Visitors to the Farmers' Market will have the opportunity to visit with our Extension staff and pick up information on food preservation and horticulture.  Youth may participate in the coloring contest, which will also be available at the Extension exhibit. 2)  Twogether in Texas: summer is a busy time for weddings and Texas AgriLife Extension is here to help you get started on the right foot!  As a certified educator, I will be offering another Twogether in Texas marriage education workshop on Saturday, August 7, beginning at 8:15 a.m.  The workshop will take place at our office, 1200 W. Houston Street, in Sulphur Springs.  The workshop is free, and engaged couples who attend will receive a certificate for a $60 waiver upon applying for a marriage license.  The certificate is good for one year from the date it is received, so even those planning a fall, winter, or spring wedding can still receive the savings.

Four main components are covered in the workshop: communication, conflict resolution, money management, and goal setting.  We also cover expectations, a vital element to consider in a marriage.  The workshop is free, but I do need couples to contact my office if they plan to attend. Refreshments will be provided, and there will be a one-hour lunch break. 3) Fall Festival volunteer meeting: all Extension Education Club members, Family & Consumer Sciences Committee members, Master Wellness Volunteers, and any one else interested in assisting with the Household Arts Contest are encouraged to attend this important meeting.  We will meet on Tuesday, August 10 at the Extension Office at noon (light meal provided) and 5:30 p.m. to allow you to attend the one that fits your schedule.  We'll discuss registration, judges' assistant responsibilities, meal and snacks for volunteers and judges, display of entries, and other areas for volunteer participation.

Since the noon meeting will include lunch, please contact my office if you plan to attend. 4) Walk Across Texas/School Health Initiative: Texas AgriLife Extension is hosting a video stream to introduce the 2010 School Walk Across Texas initiative along with Obesity Awareness Week, Texas PTA Supporting Healthy Lifestyles, and Coordinated School Health.  This will be held on Monday, August 16, 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. at our Extension Office.  There will be a lunch break.  There is no charge to attend, but I would prefer that those interested contact my office so we can make adequate audio-visual arrangements.   There are many other opportunities, so if you need more information or want to sign up for any of the above-mentioned events, contact our office at 903-885-3443.
