Of Upcoming Extension Progams
For All You Column Clippers!
First of all, I need to make a confession. Yes, I still enjoy receiving the newspaper at my front door even though I could easily sit down at my computer to peruse the articles, community calendar, want ads, etc. There's just something about having the actual newspaper in my hands where I can flip pages back and forth, or even pick it up later and go back to a particular section.
Another confession is that I'm a clipper. I like to clip articles about events and special stories. These can be found on my refrigerator, folded and tucked inside my work calendar, or stuffed in an envelope to share with a friend.
If you are also a column clipper, this column is one you'll want to clip! It seems that a large portion of my columns focus on dates and events, but this seems to be one of my best methods for getting the word out to a large group of people.
- · Last Call for "Dinner Tonight Cooking School" registration! "Dinner Tonight" is based on the website (http://healthyliving.tamu.edu) developed by Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service Family & Consumer Sciences agents. This event will take place on Tuesday, October 30, at the Hopkins County Civic Center. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., with the program starting at 6:00 p.m. Cost is $15, which includes the Dinner Tonight Cookbook, cooking demonstrations, Zumba demonstration/stretch break, exhibits, gift bags, and a chance for door prizes. Pre-registration is required. Contact my office at 903-885-3443, or e-mail me - jshicks@ag.tamu.edu - and we'll provide the registration brochure for you. This is a multi-county event, with Extension agents from Hopkins, Hunt, Rains, and Wood County providing the demonstrations. A celebrity tasting panel consisting of Hopkins County Judge Chris Brown, Hunt County Judge John Horn, KSST's Enola Gay Matthews, Rains County Leader Deborah Walker, and KMOO Cindy Owens will provide feedback on each of the eight recipes demonstrated. (We might possibly have another celebrity judge, so stay tuned!) Registration must be postmarked on or before Tuesday, October 23.

- · 39th Annual Extension "Christmas Joys - Handmade Holidays" program. This ever-popular event is scheduled for Monday, November 5, at the Southwest Dairy Museum. Two times are being offered to accommodate the large audiences - 1:30 p.m., repeated at 5:30 p.m. The cost is $5, payable at the door, which includes gift-giving ideas & demonstrations, food gift ideas featuring dairy products, decorating tips, and more. Attendees will receive a booklet of all the ideas presented, as well as a gift bag and a large array of refreshments provided by the Southwest Dairy Museum staff. You MUST call to reserve a seat. Seating is limited to 80 per session and both sessions are filling quickly! Call my office at 903-885-3443 to add your name to the list. Be sure to tell us which session you wish to attend.
- · Master Wellness Volunteer Training. Volunteers are the hands, legs, and voice for Extension in so many ways. The Master Wellness Volunteer program provides 40 hours of training in the areas of health and wellness. Upon completion of the training, volunteers agree to give 40 hours of service back to the community by assisting me with programs and events, and some conduct worksite wellness programs if they are employed outside the home. Others assist with registration for events, tray preparation for cooking classes, serve as judges for 4-H foods projects, or answer the phone when our staff must be away from the office. No previous health or wellness training required! Currently, there are eight certified Master Wellness Volunteers in Hopkins County. The training will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., January 10, 17, 24, 31 and February 8, 2013 (these are all Thursdays, with the exception of the last session.) Cost for the training is $40 which covers a three-ring notebook for all the materials, one meal, refreshments at each session, and of course, valuable training from experts in the field. Contact my office if you want to find your niche in helping our community!
- · Family & Consumer Sciences calendar of events. Due to a request from a local agency, I prepared a calendar of major programs for the 2013 year. Copies are available free of charge at the Hopkins County Extension Office, 1200-B W. Houston, Sulphur Springs. You'll be amazed at the variety of opportunities for the coming year!

That's all I have room for today. As you can see, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension has a place for everyone!
Closing Thought
