Lady Trojans "Fall Short"
in Quarterfinals Bid, Tuesday Night
by: Bobby McDonald
It was a large crowd of Cumby Lady Trojans fans that made the trip to Commerce High School, on Tuesday night, in support of the Ladies' bid for the Quarterfinals Volleyball Title. However, following a valiant effort by the Lady Trojans, they "came up short" in their bid against the Savoy Lady Cardinals. The Lady Trojans lost in three games 27-25; 25-18; and 25-17.
The three game set ended the season for the Lady Trojans, but the team has overcome a number of outstanding obstacles and grown throughout the season.
"If you'd told me the first of the season that this team would have made it to the quarterfinals, I would have laughed!" explained one devoted fan. "But, Shelley (Jones) has led, persuaded and coached this group of girls into a team that has developed into a reckoning force. It just seemed that each week they got better and continued to improve!"
"I'm certainly proud of this team," expressed Coach Shelley Jones. "After an extremely competitive team last year, we experienced some 're-building' on the court, at the first of the season, but these young ladies have accepted the challenge and improved every week, as we made it through district and continued in the play-offs. All of them can hold their heads high and know that they've made a great effort, throughout the season!"
Seniors, Courtney Salinas, Demi Newsom, Valerie Partridge, Chasity Nottingham, and Courtney Crumpton played the last game of their high school volleyball career, on Tuesday night, but with Basketball Season already started, they won't "rest," as they change uniforms and hit the hardwood!
"I believe I saw the longest volley, I've ever seen in volleyball history!" exclaimed one Lady Trojan fan. "It was during the second game of the night, and it demonstrated just how hard both teams were playing to earn the title!"

Congratulations, Lady Trojans!!!
