It was an enthusiastic crowd that gathered on Main Street in Sulphur Springs, to officially break ground for the new renovations, that will be the first phase of the downtown revitalization program. Monday's ceremony marks the beginning of what is planned for a multi-step program that will enhance the beauty and invite tourism to the downtown area of Sulphur Springs. City Manager Marc Maxwell, City Staff, City Council Members, and friends and neighbors of the project, gathered at 11:00 a.m. for the ceremonies.

Hotdogs were offered for lunch, while the crowd discussed the renovations that promise to keep the architectural value of the area to coincide with the Hopkins County Courthouse and other historic landmarks in the area. Traffic had been changed to four-way stop signs at the intersections of South Davis and Main Street and North Davis Street and Connally Street. This is keeping with the plans for the renovations and will aid in "slowing down" the traffic into the area.

"We're excited about this phase of the program beginning and look forward to look of Sulphur Springs being enhanced with each step of the project," expressed City Manager, Marc Maxwell. "Certainly it will be difficult for the businesses located along Main Street, but we hope everyone will 'excuse the mess' and continue to patronize these forward thinking businesses that are looking to enhance the beauty of downtown!"

The project calls for the installation of new sidewalks, brick entrances into the Main Street area from the downtown area and Davis Streets, and landscaping along the sidewalks. "It's going to be absolutely beautiful and represents the commitment of our city staff and business owners to make improvements in our city," expressed Maxwell. "It truly says to everyone that we are working toward a beautiful downtown area!"
