Cabo Sanvig and Maegan McMorris Win
Top Honors in Market Poultry Show, Saturday

It was Sulphur Springs FFA member Cabo Sanvig who had to wipe the "chicken poop" from his face and endure about two hours of holding his birds in the air, "but it was all worth it," according to Sanvig, when his pen of three broilers were named Grand Champions of the 2010 Hopkins County Youth Market Show, on Saturday morning. "I've raise chickens for the show for several years now, and I knew they were good birds, but you never know about what the other exhibitors are bringing and you don't know exactly how uniform your birds are going to be, until you get to selecting them for the show!" expressed a smiling Sanvig. "The object is to get three birds that are all exactly the same and uniform in a group, and have outstanding quality throughout the pen!"

Undoubtedly Sanvig, knew what he was talking about, as his three birds were judged Grand Champion and the best pen of birds of this year's show, when the announcement was made at approximately 9:30 a.m., on Saturday morning. The show had begun at 7:30 and when you are showing chickens, that have been fed almost all they can eat, and are shown holding them upside down, you never know what might happen. Just as the judge came to Sanvig's pen for a closer inspection, during the championship drive, the bird he was holding decided it was time to defecate! Sanvig was covered in "chicken poop" and had to clean his cap, shirt, face and arms, provided by his vocational agriculture teacher and mom! But, when the birds were named Grand Champion, Sanvig quickly forgot about the incident and was beaming!

Meanwhile, the Reserve Grand Champion pen of broilers, owned by Maegan McMorris, of the Stars of Texas 4-H Club, had their own story, as well. Maegan's birds were extremely small when the local tornado came through the Jill Lane area of Sulphur Springs, with its path of destruction. It tore-up the roof on her home and her "chicken house!"

Miracuously, all twenty-five chicks survived the devastation and were moved to where there was heat and electricity and made it to the top of this year's show. "I really don't know how the survived, when you look at the pictures following the storm," expressed Maegan. "But, they're certainly tough little boogers and came to the show in a whirlwind!"

Maegan is home schooled with Christian Liberty Academy and is active with athletics at CHESS, as well as undertaking her broiler project!
