"Missed Free-Throws" Ends Season
For Miller Grove Hornets, Monday Night

by: Bobby McDonald

It was a series of missed free-throws that sent the Miller Grove Hornets back to Hopkins County and ended their season in Mabank, on Monday Night. The Hornets played hard and led the match-up at the end of the first quarter. And, they still controlled a 17-14 lead at the halftime intermission.

The second half began with the Slocum Mustangs "catching up" and a real battle began between the two evenly matched teams. It was "nip and tuck" throughout the second half. The only difference was that the Hornets missed on a series of free-throws and that managed a 5-point edge for the Slocum Mustangs, who won the match-up 35-40.

Ranked #1 in the state going into the match-up, the Slocum Mustangs will continue their season, and the Hornets must ponder "what could have been!"

"It was disappointing!" expressed a stressed-out Coach Gary Billingsley. "We were so, so close and just didn't make those free throws that we should have made! It was right there before our eyes and we didn't make them!"

The Hornets have had a great and admirable season, to be proud of, but fans like the team were disappointed to have come so close to defeating the number #1 ranked team and advancing, and then to see the win slip away in the fourth quarter!

Congratulations to the Miller Grove
Hornets, on a Great, Great Season!!!
