Queen Haley Reynolds gives the official word on how to milk a cow,
to the eight Dairy Festival Candidates in the Milking Contest.

"They at least knew which end of the cow to start on," bemoaned one of the parent's of a contestant, as they described Amy and Dickie Scroggins' win in the parent's milking contest, on Saturday. "Amy had been reared on a dairy farm!"

Despite sweltering heat and high humidity, the annual Dairy Festival Milking Contest was hosted beneath the shade trees adjacent to the Hopkins County Regional Civic Center and brought loads of fun and friendly competition, on Saturday afternoon, at 3:00 p.m. "It was certainly hot, but then, that's about what we can expect for weather in June, in Hopkins County," explained Dickie Scroggins, as he talked about winning the parent's contest. "We really didn't have any strategy, except to hit the bucket with any milk that we managed to squirt!"

The eight 2009 Dairy Festival Candidates were "all smiles" after completing Saturday's milking contest.

Before the eight contestants for this year's Hopkins County Dairy Festival Queen crown began their contest, current Queen, Haley Reynolds advised them to "pull down and squeeze hard!" The cow bell was rung and contestants had three minutes to "squeeze for white gold!"

Winners in Saturday's 2009 Milking Contest included: left to right, Jami Scroggins, 1st Place, Elizabeth Sheffield, 2nd Place,
and Brittany Woolley, 3rd place.

When the weighing was complete, it was necessary for three young ladies to have a "milk-off" for the third prize position. Brittney Woolley managed to "milk it for all it was worth" and capture the third prize. Elizabeth Sheffield won second prize in the contest, and Jami Scroggins had "milked her way to the top," as she captured the 2009 Milking Contest title and trophy! "I had a cooperative cow and I had practiced some, preparing for the contest," explained Jami. "And, my Mother and Grandmother told me to squeeze real hard and get my milk in the bucket!"

And, David Burns and Bruce Millard captured the third prize as the parents of
contestant Daylan Burns.

Then, in what has become a really competitive contest, eight balloon pilot teams, took buckets in hand and made their attempt at "mining for white gold!" It was the team of balloon pilot, Lance Terry and his wife, that captured this year's title, and bragging rights for the next year! "I'm not going to let any of them forget who won this contest!" exclaimed Terry. "We're milking champions!"
