by: Bobby McDonald
This years Chapter Advisors include: left to right, Principal Charles Adlerman, Kayla Overly,
and Renee Maeker.
For forty-four students at Sulphur Springs High School, who had demonstrated outstanding scholarship, service, leadership, and character, Monday night was their opportunity to "shine" as they were inducted as new members into the SSHS Gladys Alexander Chapter of the National Honor Society. They joined thirty-two second year members, who fulfilled the same high standards as they became members last year. "I want you to recite the pledge of the NHS, that signifies the high standards that your are called upon to exhibit in your school work, community, and life," expounded NHS President, Ariana Bravo, as she welcomed new members.
New members recited the National Honor Society Pledge.
"I pledge myself to uphold the high purposes of the National Honor Society to which I have been selected. I will be true to the principles for which it stands; I will be loyal to my school; and I will maintain and encourage high standards of scholarship, service, leadership, and character."
Other National Honor Society officers, Vice-President, Ashleigh Wallace; Secretary, Allisa Doughtie; and Treasurer, Rebecca Sehnert, conducted the traditional candlelight ceremony that signifies membership into the society.

Senior member, Katie Cooper, told a brief history about the chapter and extolled the many virtues of Miss Gladys Alexander, whom is the namesake of the local chapter. "Miss Alexander taught about everything in the high school curriculum, besides vocational agriculture, and she even substitute taught in that subject," explained Cooper. "And, she was a natural born leader, educator, and model for students to emulate!"
Katie Cooper gave a brief history of the Gladys Alexander Chapter of the National Honor Society, that began at SSHS in 1921, and
was named for the innovative educator, Miss Gladys Alexander.
Each inductee received their membership card from Principal Charlie Alderman.
And then, signed the roll of members in the chapter.
