Courses For August

Paris Junior College's Continuing Education Department will offer a 
selection of classes during the month of August, according to Vice 
President of Workforce Education John Spradling.

Business
How to Start Your Own Business will be held from 9-11 a.m. on Friday, 
August 6. This free seminar is designed for anyone who has a desire to 
own a business. Topics to be covered include legal requirements, 
feasibility studies, forms of business ownership and their advantages 
and disadvantages, the business plan, finding the money, what lenders 
want to know, SBA loans, and other loan sources.

Government Contracting 101 will offer the basics of government 
contracting at the federal, state and local level. It will be 
presented from 10 a.m. to noon on Tuesday, August 10. Topics will 
include regulations, uniform contract format, contract types, 
electronic commerce and more.

The QuickBooks class will meet from 8 a.m. to noon, each Tuesday and 
Friday, August 24 through September 3. Participants will learn to set 
up and maintain a chart of accounts, reconcile a checking account, 
create and print invoices, receipts, and statements, track payables, 
inventory, and receivables, create estimates and generate reports.

Free counseling to start or expand a small business is offered Monday 
through Friday at the Paris Small Business Development Center, 1405 
South Collegiate, 903-782-0224, and at the Paris Economic Development 
Corporation offices at 1125 Bonham Street, 903-785-6469. Call today to

Free counseling for small business is offered in Cooper the fourth 
Tuesday of each month at the Delta County Chamber of Commerce, 41 W

Free counseling for small business is offered in Clarksville the first 
Tuesday of each month at the Historic Red River County Chamber of 
Commerce, 101 North Locust Street. Call 903-427-2645 to schedule an

Childcare
An eight-hour pre-service training is required of all new employees in 
regulated childcare facilities. The course is scheduled on an 
individual basis. Call 903-782-0447 for information.

Computer
The Microsoft Word 2007 Basic class is scheduled from 6-9 p.m., each 
Monday and Wednesday, August 2-11. This word processing program makes 
it easy to create a variety of professional looking documents from 
simple letters and memos to newsletters, blog posts, business cards, 
resumes, flyers and more.

An Introduction to Computers class, Part II, will be held from 9 a.m. 
to 4 p.m. on Saturday, August 7 and 14. Participants will learn how to 
browse the Internet searching for websites, how to send and receive e-
mail and how to send and receive attachments.

The Microsoft Excel 2007 Basic class will meet from 8 a.m. to noon 
each Friday, August 6-20. This electronic spreadsheet class will offer 
instruction to create a worksheet, work with formulas and functions, 
format a worksheet, work with charts, and analyze data using formulas.

 

 



Surfin' the Web will be offered from 1-4 p.m. each Tuesday, August 
10-24. This class is an introduction to the Internet including e-mail, 
home page, and how to perform basic research to address company or 
business needs.

Driver's Education/Defensive Driving
The Driver's Education class is approved by the Texas Department of 
Public Safety, and is open to students at least 15 years of age. The 
class meets from 4-6 p.m., Monday through Thursday, August 2-26. A 
birth certificate, Verification of Enrollment form, and social 
security card must be provided.

The Defensive Driving class is offered by Paris Junior College under 
provider #067 in accordance with the standards established by the 
National Traffic Safety Institute of Texas, Inc. license #C0297. The 
class will be held from 6-9 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday, August 23-24. 
It consists of six hours of classroom instruction.

Health/Medical Care
A Nurse Aide class is scheduled to meet from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday 
through Thursday, August 2-18. This class offers preparation for entry 
level nursing assistants to achieve a level of knowledge, skills and 
abilities essential to provide basic care to residents of long-term 
care facilities.

Working With The Mentally Ill in Nursing Home Session III will be held 
from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, August 4. Participants will 
increase their knowledge of the purpose and function of psychotropic 
drugs as well as possible reasons for resident noncompliance, and 
become familiar with the medication

The Basic Life Support (CPR) class is approved by the American Heart 
Association. It will meet from 5:30-9 p.m., Wednesday and Thursday, 
August 4 and 5. It will be repeated from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on 
Friday, August 20. This class offers instruction in lifesaving skills 
for respiratory (choking and near drowning) and cardiac emergencies 
involving adults, children and infants.

A Domestic Violence training program will be held from 8 a.m. to 4:30 
p.m. on Saturday, August 7. This presentation is designed for law 
enforcement officers, victim advocates, victim service providers, 
students and counselors. The program will help participants understand 
how to better assist victims of domestic violence. The behavior of 
victims, abusers, officers and community members will be discussed as 
well as effective early intervention methods.

The Basic Life Support (CPR) Re-certification for Health Professionals 
will be offered in a choice of two time frames. One session will be 
held from 5:30-9:30 p.m. on Monday, August 9. It will be offered from 
8 a.m. to noon on Friday, August 27. This session is an update and 
review for current CPR certified cardholders. Written examination and 
successful demonstration of skills is required. The American Heart 
Association certified this course.

 



Jewelry
A Counter Sketching and Rendering class will meet Monday through 
Thursday, August 23-27. Interested participants should call for the 
scheduled times for this class. The first half of the week is based in 
black and white pencil sketches, including document studies, metal and 
gemstones interpretation, shading, perspective and technical drawing. 
The second half of the week is based on how to transfer black and 
white designs to color and the realistic painted rendition of white 
and yellow gold, transparent and opaque gems and pearls.

Kids Hurt Too
The Kids Hurt Too seminar will be presented from 6-9 p.m. on Tuesday, 
August 3. This seminar is designed to help parents understand the 
needs of their children throughout the process of divorce.

Workforce Development
An OSHA General Industry Safety course will be given from 8 a.m. to 5 
p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday, August 4 and 5. Required topics 
include: introduction to OSHA; walking and working surfaces; exit 
routes; emergency action plans; fire prevention plans and fire 
protection; electrical; personal protective equipment; and hazard 
communication. Elective topics include: fall protection; lock out/tag 
out; machine guarding; and confined space. Upon successful course 
completion, participants will receive a Department of Labor OSHA 10 
hour general safety and health course completion card.

The Occupational Safety and Health Standards for the Construction 
Industry seminar will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through 
Thursday, August 16-19. Required topics include: introduction to OSHA; 
OSHA focus four hazards including fall protection, electrical, struck 
by, caught in between; personal protective and lifesaving equipment, 
and health hazards in construction including hazard communication and 
silica. Elective topics include: fire protection and prevention; 
materials handling; storage, use and disposal; tools - hand and power; 
welding and cutting; motor vehicles, mechanized equipment and marine 
operations; excavations; steel erection; and confined space entry. 
Upon successful course completion, participants will receive a 
Department of Labor OSHA 30 hour construction safety and health course 
completion card.
