"Get the Camera Out, And Plan on
Being on the Downtown Square, Saturday Morning"
by: Bobby McDonald
Many of you have asked for it! And, the Downtown Business Alliance has recognized the interest for Hopkins County to participate in the Scott Kelby Third Annual Worldwide Photowalk, on Saturday, July 24th, in downtown Sulphur Springs. The event will begin at Plain and Fancy Sandwich Shoppe, at 9:00 a.m. This is your opportunity to "dust off" that camera, get the batteries charged, and the lense cleaned, so you can come out, be creative, and join others who are interested in the art of photography. Who knows? You might find that special shot, capture it at a creative angle, and be determined the winner!
"It's anyone's game!" expressed Mike Laeding, owner of Sulphur Springs Photography and leader of the walk. "The sky is the limit and it's up to everyone to be creative and just see what they can capture!"
Laeding explained that he and Perry Altenbaumer, President of the Downtown Business Alliance, had walked through the downtown area and established the route, that would be taken on Saturday morning. Starting from Plain and Fancy, photographers will walk east to College Street, progress up Oak Avenue behind the historic Hopkins County Courthouse, turn left on Jefferson Street and make their way to Church Street, progressing to Atkins Street. Traveling down Atkins Street, the group will take a left on North Davis and travel to Connally Street and walk through the construction back to the square. They'll then walk along the west side of the square to Main Street and make their way through the Farmer's Market area, back to Davis. At Davis, they will turn left and progress to Tomlinson Street and make their way back to Gilmer, take a left and return to the square and the starting-point at Plain and Fancy.
"I feel this gives a wide variety of structures, historic buildings, textures, and yes, even the construction in the area, to document what is happening in Sulphur Springs, on this one day in the history of our community," related Laeding. "We're wanting to encourage photographers to look at things differently, capture things that they may not have previously noticed, and to truly 'think out of the box,' on this walk!"
"You never know. You might capture a small child feasting on a fresh peach at the Farmer's Market, or a butterfly tasting the nectar of a flower," related Laeding. "Or, there may be a building that you've passed by for years, every day going to work, that has some hidden feature, that you discover, once you've taken the opportunity to look at it closely! One never knows what they might find, as we walk along the downtown area of our town and discover the many, many features that are there!"
To encourage you and to get you thinking about the event, I spent about 15 minutes in the downtown area, on Tuesday morning, and captured these shots, as I walked. Enjoy them and begin thinking about possibilities that you might want to capture on Saturday morning, as you join other photographers and begin your own creative journey!
