Catfish and Auction Raise Over
$18,000.00 For Sulphur Bluff
Scholars, Saturday Night
by: Bobby McDonald
An enthusiastic crowd of Sulphur Bluff High School Alumini, local businessmen, and supporters returned to Sulphur Bluff on Saturday night, and "dug deep" in their pockets to support the 2007-08 Sulphur Bluff Scholarship Foundation, in their effort to raise money to award Sulphur Bluff students. The Foundation has three types of scholarships that they give to Sulphur Bluff students. They include the traditional scholarship that is given to graduating seniors at Sulphur Bluff High School, an 8th Grade Motivational Scholarship, and an Alumni Scholarship that graduates can apply for after they graduate.
Saturday night's event featured a catfish dinner catered by AJ's Fishhouse, located on Lake Fork, a silent auction, and a live auction. Items were donated by local Hopkins County businesses, and handmade items were donated by members of the Sulphur Bluff community.
Vocalist, Rhonda Neal, provided entertainment for Saturday night's Scholarship Foundation
dinner and auction.
Totals on Monday revealed that $18,882.00 had been collected from the fundraiser, with some more donations expected to be made during the year.

Jaime Harper serves as president of the Sulphur Bluff Scholarship Foundation, with Cara Dunca serving as vice-president, Frankie Cooper serving as treasurer, and James Jones, serves as secretary. Other members of the board of directors include: Jan Bartley, Gwen Crutcher, Dena Emerson, Bruce Fielden, Terry Goldsmith, Kim Grider, Nikki Hurley, Tina Jaggers, Amy Northcutt, Tonya Potts, Karen Powers, Gina Raine, Shirley Reynolds, Tressie South, and Christy Wheeler.
"We work all year to host this event, to help students from Sulphur Bluff gain a higher education," expressed Tina Jaggers, member of the board. "It provides educational opportunities for our students that allows them a better position in life."
Fond memories......These Sulphur Bluff Yearbooks provided many memories for Alumni who
attended Saturday night's dinner and auction.
"We want to thank all of the many people and businesses that contribute to this event, each year," expressed Jan Bartley, another board member. "Without their generous donations, this event could never be hosted and our students wouldn't have the opportunities for these educational opportunities!"

Plans are already "in the making" for next year's event, to raise even more money for Sulphur Bluff High School students. "We especially like to have the opportunity to offer the Alumni Scholarship," expressed another board member. "This scholarship is for the student who maybe didn't think they needed a college education, when they first graduated high school, but after they have matured, they realize the need for added advantages. They can come back and apply for the help, when they really need it, many times when they are attempting to rear their family!"
You can contact Sulphur Bluff School to make a donation to this outstanding effort, if you were unable to attend Saturday night's event!
