"As We Change Seasons"

by: Bobby McDonald

Last night's "blue" moon began to "peek" over the crowd in Cumby, at the
Trojan football game.

It just so happened that I was outside and able to witness the changing from August to September, and watch God's beautiful creation unfold. I was shooting the football game in Cumby, as the "blue moon" made its rare appearance, on Friday night, and had an appointment to shoot some cow pictures, early on Saturday morning in Reilly Springs. The early morning gave me the opportunity to stand in awe of God's creation and watch the changing from summer to autumn, unfold before me.

Then, on Saturday morning, I had the opportunity to stand on ground that my Great-Great Grandfather, Daniel N.C. McDonald, purchased in 1867, and watch the morning sunrise. I couldn't help but wonder if he'd stood on the very same property and gazed to the east, watching the sun rise over Reilly Springs. He'd have been worried about the price of cotton and about getting his crop harvested, during the autumn season. I've read from his journal about the various pounds of cotton that sharecroppers and his own family made on the very land I was standing on. And, I've viewed his notes, that he left behind, about the weather, the price of cloth, sides of bacon, shoes, tobacco, flour, and sugar. He, most likely, was concerned if the cotton harvested would be enough to sustain life for another year, for his family and the people that depended on him.

Meanwhile, while I was shooting the following photos, I received a message on my I-phone......the world we live in, in 2012, suddenly broke the early morning silence. And, I was reminded that today was Danny Lawrence's birthday, my nephew. Thirty years ago today, I traveled to Greenville, Texas, to witness his birth, and after welcoming him into the world, I brought his almost two-year old, older brother, Michael home with me. We made it fine, to Brashear, before I had to change a "dirty diaper!"

Life truly slows down for no one, and I couldn't help but wonder what my Great-Great Grandfather would have thought of me standing on land that he once owned and "traveling" via the internet to almost any place in the world, sending photos of the sun rise over his former homestead?

However, as I gazed at the beautiful sunrise in the east and turned around and looked to the west and the "blue moon" was still in sight, I was reminded, that God was in control in the 1860's and He's still in control, today, in 2012. And, through His goodness and His ability to bring us beauty, all is well in this world! He's watching over us and is in control of it all!
