Spelling Bee Champion For Second Year

Timothy White, left, won this year's Hopkins County Spelling Bee, while Dakota Carroll, right was the
runner-up in the 2010 county contest.

It was the word, f-i-n-a-n-c-i-e-r, that put Timothy White at the "top of the heap" in Tuesday afternoon's Hopkins County Spelling Bee, that was held at the SSISD Administration Building. Tuesday's win makes the second year in a row that White, a student at CHESS School, has won the contest. He is the son of Richey and Lonette White of Sulphur Springs.

Runner-up in this year's county contest was Dakota Carroll, a student at Saltillo School, who misspelled the word a-f-f-i-l-i-a-t-i-o-n, giving White the opportunity to spell one more word and land the championship for this year.

Students from CHESS, Como-Pickton ISD, Douglas Intermediate School, Sulphur Springs Middle School, and Saltillo School competed in this year's county contest.

Rachel Sosebee and White represented CHESS, while Como-Pickton School was represented by Marc Tuinier and X-Sarrius Askew. Faith Singleton and Story Thompson were the entries from Douglas Intermediate School and Taliana Bell and Mason Brown represented Sulphur Springs Middle School. Saltillo representatives in the contest were Dakota Carroll and Paige Leftwich.

Miss Gail Herman served as the word pronouncer for this year's contest, while Sherry Chester and Holly Folmar served as the official judges. Betty Lawson was the coordinator for this year's county contest.

White, by winning the county contest, will be advancing to the Dallas Morning News Regional Spelling Contest, that will be televised on WFAA-TV (Channel 8), on March 20, 2010.
