Sapaugh and Vanwinkle Team Named
2012 Hopkins County Stew Champions

by: Bobby McDonald

We caught the winning team "doctoring up" the pot, on Saturday morning, as they prepared the award
winning stew.

"A dash of this, a cup of this, and plenty of secret ingredients," was all I could get out of the award winning team of Don Sapaugh and James Vanwinkle, as I stopped by their campsite, on Saturday morning, when they were preparing this year's championship stew. "I'd have to slit you thoat, if I was to tell," added James Vanwinkle, as he sprinkled something into the brew!

However, when the 144 pots of stew that were entered in the 2012 43rd Annual Hopkins County Stew Contest were tasted by the judges, the concoction mixed by Sapaugh and Vanwinkle "rose to the top" to be named this year's Champions. Sponsored by City National Bank, the team received a $500.00 prize donated by Luminant and their quarter of champion stew was purchased by Agriland Farm Credit for the top money of $1200.00.

Anne Wilkerson & Reginald Childs, left, were named second prize, in the Super Stew Category, and the team of Blake Sheffield and Chuck Collins, right
received the third prize in the Super Stew Category. Receiving Honorable mention Super Stew was the team of Shirley Wakeman and Elaine Merrell.
