Top 2008 Market Swine Show

It was loads of "squeals" and some top quality "bacon and ham on the hoof" at Friday night's 2008 Youth Market Swine Show, in the Hopkins County Civic Center. Taylor Emerine, a member of the Sulphur Springs FFA, showed his 273 pound class heavy-weight gilt to Grand Champion honors, while Dustin Emerick, of the Miller Grove FFA exhibited the Reserve Grand Champion, with his 264 pound, Class 7 winner.

The show began at 6:00 p.m., before a large crowd of parents and spectators, with the first class of the night being Junior Swine Showmanship.  After an entertaining round of pigs feeling good and many of the youth showing for the first time, Miller Grove FFA member, Madison Rater, bested the competition to be named the winner. She accepted her award amid a large round of applause.

In the next class, more experienced showmen, competed in the Senior Swine Showmanship competition. After a duel between several top showmen, it was Morgan Lampp, a member of the Sulphur Springs FFA, that walked away with the winning award, as she captured the honors.

Class 1 competition began with a class of eight pigs weighing between 225 and 227 pounds. Jackson Massey, a member of the Sulphur Springs FFA won the class with his 225 pound animal. Other winners included: Jena Burns, Miller Grove FFA; Tate Ramirez, Hopkins County 4-H; Dallas Dannheim, Sulphur Springs FFA; Danielle Johnson, Hopkins County 4-H; Dallas Dannheim, Sulphur Springs FFA; Kristopher Nottingham, Cumby FFA; and Drew Forsman, Hopkins County 4-H.

Eight more animals competed in Class 2, that featured animals weighing 228 to 231 pounds. Madison Rater, a member of the Miller Grove FFA Chapter, showed her 229 pound Hampshire crossbred gilt, to top honors in the class. Other winners in the class included: Hanna Moreland, Hopkins County 4-H; Kaylee Anderson, Sulphur Springs FFA; Jackson Massey, Sulphur Springs FFA; Jake Stephenson, Sulphur Springs FFA; Koyt Koon, Sulphur Springs FFA; and Alex Ziegler, Miller Grove FFA.

In Class 3, it was Lindsey Fouse, a member of the Sulphur Springs FFA, that showed her 234 pound barrow to top honors. Pigs in the class weighed from 232 to 235 pounds. Other winners in the class included: Garrett Sprague and Danielle Johnson, Hopkins County 4-H; Chase Lee and Shaye Lynn Emerick, Miller Grove FFA; Clay Mitchell, Sulphur Bluff FFA; and Garrett Low, Como-Pickton FFA.

Class 4 entries weighed between 236 and 242 pounds, and it was Hannah Caudle, of the Miller Grove FFA, that showed her 239 pound gilt to the top spot in the class. Other winners in the class included: Jamie Askins, Sulphur Springs FFA; Amanda Sims and Aaron Smith of the Miller Grove FFA; Kayla Phillips and Katie Dougan of the Hopkins County 4-H; Justin Johnson of the Miller Grove FFA; and Jessica Hendricks of Como-Pickton FFA.

Eight individuals competed in Class 5 of the swine show, featuring pigs that weighed from 246 to 250 pounds. It was Hopkins County 4-H member, Ethan Phillips, that won the class with his 248 pound animal. Other class winners included: Morgan Lampp, Sulphur Springs FFA; Caleb Raine, Hopkins County 4-H; Morgan Lampp, Sulphur Springs FFA; Taylor Raine, and Harley Wilburn, Hopkins County 4-H; Breanna Raliegh, Como-Pickton FFA, and Cole Sprague, Hopkins County 4-H.

In the sixth class of the night, featuring market swine weighing 251 t0 257 pounds, it was Sulphur Springs FFA member, Dylan Dannheim, that showed his 252 pound animal to the top position. Other winners included: Hanna Schulz, Hopkins County 4-H; Cody Jennings Miller Grove FFA; Lexi Anderson, Hopkins County 4-H; Dakota Jones, Miller Grove FFA; Cody Raliegh, Como-Pickton FFA; and Brenton Burnside, Hopkins County 4-H.

Dustin Emerick, a member of the Miller Grove FFA Chapter, exhibited his 264 pound barrow to the top spot in the Class 7 of the Swine Show. The class featured animals weighing 262 to 265 pounds.  Other class winners included: Kayle Askins, Hopkins County 4-H; Brandon Stowater and Tyler Raine, Hopkins County 4-H; Brennan Rhoades, Sulphur Springs FFA; Billy Bob Norris, Miller Grove FFA; and Hanna Moreland, Hopkins County 4-H.

Class 8, the heavy-weight swine, weighing 269 to 273 pounds, was won by Taylor Emerine, with his stylish Hampshire crossbred gilt, that weighed 273 pounds. Other class winners included: Laine Anderson, Sulphur Springs FFA; Madison Rater, Miller Grove FFA; and Jamie Askins, Ben Stowater, Sarah Forsman, and Harley Wilburn, all members of Hopkins County 4-H.

The Judge had commented in the heavy-weight class on the style and balance of Taylor Emerine's gilt, and it was no surprise, when he named the beautifully groomed animal Grand Champion of the Show. He commented that Emerine had done an outstanding job of presenting the animal, as well. The second place heavy-weight animal was brought back into the ring, for consideration, but it was the Class 7 entry of Dustin Emerick, from the Miller Grove FFA, that "got the nod" for Reserve Champion honors for the 2008 Show.

Action will continue on Saturday morning, when the Market Poultry Show begins at 7:30 a.m., followed by the Market Steer Show and the Beef Heifer Show.

The Sale of Champions will begin promptly at 6:00 p.m., Saturday night, when the top animals in all of the species will be paraded before local supporters and business owners, in what youth hope will be a record sale, in the Hopkins County Civic Center. The Professional Ag Workers will serve stew and chili to all prospective buyers, parents, and exhibitors, prior to the Sale of Champions. The public is invited to come-out and support the youth of Hopkins County and help them be rewarded for the hard work and dedication.
