It was up, bright and early, for members of 22 area schools, on Friday morning, as they made their way to Sulphur Springs High School for the Welding Challenge Ag Mechanics Competition, hosted by the Sulphur Springs FFA. Twenty-two teams were entered in the skills portion of the contest, and ten teams, representing, Bells, Bullard, Como-Pickton, Cooper, Lone Oak, Mt. Pleasant, Rivercrest, Rockwall, Sulphur Springs, Wills Point, and Winona, were entered in a contest to cut, construct, and complete a BBQ Grill, during the contest.

In the BBQ Grill Competition, teams of three members, were given the challenge to construct the project from materials provided, but had to measure, cut the materials, and weld them together, being judged on their skills and the result of the final project, at the end of the competition.

These members of the Como-Pickton FFA Ag Mech Team, were busy constructing
and assembling their BBQ Grill in the contest.

Retired Sulphur Springs Vocational Agriculture, John Boles, was busy making a huge "washpot" of Hopkins County Stew and Chili, that would provide lunch for the visiting FFA Chapters.

"This is just an opportunity for Northeast Texas area FFA Students to have some fun competition, demonstrate their skills, and create some excitement in developing skills in agricultural mechanics," advised Sulphur Springs Vocational Agriculture Teacher, Dan Froneberger, the organizer of the contest. "I want to thank my fellow ag teachers, Dannie Johnson and Amber Norris for all of their help, and to a host of volunteers and sponsors, who have made this contest possible. We're hoping it will be something that will continue and develop into a highlight of our year, for area chapters!"

teams that were entered in the BBQ Grill competition.

If the beginnings of the contest were any indication, and the industrious students who were busy constructing projects, this event is off to a great start!
