The Sulphur Springs Wildcats went undefeated in District play and "grabbed" the District Championship, on Friday night, in Marshall, as they defeated the Mavericks 62-34. This puts them in the "top seed" position for play-offs and poises them for advancement through the brackets of the "third season!"
Friday night's victory was definitely a team effort with both quarterbacks, Brad Macek and Derek Ingram, having outstanding nights. And, a host of receivers scored the 62 points in touchdowns. With another outstanding offensive effort, the Wildcats are poised to break a number of school records in the coming weeks, if they can advance in the playoffs.
Individuals are also poised to make and break records on receiving, numbers of touchdowns, and yardage efforts. Senior Willy Ivery, scored five touchdowns on Friday night, to boost his string of scores to 28 for the season. One of his efforts was the inspiring 67 yard kick-off return, that sent the crowd into a "screaming frenzy!" Ivery and his cousin, Buddy Ivery, continue to inspire and add to their individual totals, as the season continues. Friday night, Senior Cole Hill scored a pair of touchdowns, and both Buddy Ivery and Tim Monk scored a touchdown each, in the victory.
"If everyone can say healthy and continue to play, this team can win ball games!" exclaimed Coach Greg Owens. "They're a force to contend with and always come out and play hard to the final play of the game, and that's what it takes to advance in the play-offs!"
The Wildcats will travel to McKinney for the first play-off game, as they meet Wylie East, in Ron Poe Stadium, at 7:30 p.m., on Friday night.
In other District 14-3A action, Mt. Pleasant is the runner-up, completing the season with a 4-1 record, only losing to the Wildcats. Hallsville is in the number three spot, as they completed the season with a 3-2 record. Texas High finished 2-3 and Marshall 1-4, with Pine Tree finishing 0-5
