Yantis Students Advancing to State UIL
From Chip Matthews and Laurie Steward
The Yantis Academic UIL Team competed at the Regional UIL Meet at Stephen F.Austin State University last Saturday. Twenty-two students participated in eleven events at the Nacogdoches meet.
Five students will advance to the State Academic UIL Meet in Austin on May 21-22.
Jennie Shoemaker won third in Calculator Applications. The Yantis Spelling/Vocabulary Team, consisting of Samantha Dodgen, Lila Hurley, Dylan Beech, and D.J. Large, finished second and will advance to state as the Wild Card Team. The team earned the third highest score on the regional test among the twenty schools competing at four regional academic meets in Conference 1A. Defending state champion Samantha Dodgen also captured top honors in Computer Applications by achieving a perfect score in that contest (300 of 300 correct). In addition, Samantha tied for first place in Spelling/Vocabulary but lost the gold medal by one tie-breaker word.

The Yantis Academic Team is sending competitors to the State UIL Meet for the fourteenth consecutive year. During those years Yantis students have won fourteen state medals, including 6 state championship gold medals and 5 runner-up silver medals.
Congratulations, Owl UIL!!!
